Promptober Day 4: Arrow

A light shone in Terra’s eyes. She lifted her hand to shade her gaze.

“Clandid? Is that you?”

The light turned toward the ground and Terra saw a shadow come closer to her. Her eyes were still adjusting to the change in the light. Clandid stepped closer. She noticed the arrow emblem of their squadron on his suit.

“Terra, you shouldn’t be on watch by yourself.” Clandid said. Terra shrugged. She always patrolled the perimeter away from the other guards.

“You worry too much,” Terra turned to start another loop around the east side of the barracks.

Clandid fell in step with Terra. He walked along with her taking in stock of the surroundings. Terra and Clandid had both been transported to this outlier planet 3 months ago. Along with a slew of other crew members, their goal was to maintain the energy facility and update any hardware or software that needed it. It had been an uneventful trip which was nice. Terra had just come from a placement in a warring planet. Terra listened to the crunch of their footsteps as they made a loop.

The planet had a rocky sand surface with little vegetation. A faraway sun started to rise on the horizon. On this planet, there was no beautiful sunrise instead the fiery light brought on a glow that felt more similar to stage lights found on Earth. Terra looked out to the black sky.

“Clandid, do you think that we will be finished soon?” Terra stopped walking.

Clandid stopped too.

“Maybe, there’s something not right with the new software update. We may have to stay longer depending on Jamey’s ability to get it all done.” He turned to look at the horizon.

“Hmmm”, Terra shrugged. “Well, I thought it might be nice–”

“Shh!” Clandid said. He lifted his hand to shield his eyes.

Terra turned and followed his gaze. She didn’t dare ask what Clandid was looking at. She knew better than to break his concentration. He was a trained scout for a reason. Terra squinted her eyes to try and make out something in the distance. Clanded shifted his feet.  She noticed a tiny speck of light moving in the distance. Was that what Clandid saw?

The speck increased in size. Quickly becoming a large dot and then a bright ball.

“Is that headed toward us?” Terra asked, a bit shocked.

Clandid swore. He tapped the arrow on his suit. “Colonel, this is C-4. We have a problem.”
