Promptober Day 6: Ignite

The warm air from the fire touched my hands and cheek. I leaned my arm against the chair and let the heat spread across my face. The fire ignited warm memories in my heart as I closed my eyes.

It seems hard to remember a time without the glow of Felix by my side. For his constant companionship has been critical in these months following my father’s passing. He had been kind, wary, and solid. Many of the arrangements I couldn’t bear to make, Felix took charge and decided for me. My sister says he is pushy but I don’t mind his decisive manner. I find it refreshing. Someone to lean on when life is in an upheaval. My dear, dear father. Oh how I miss him! His funny jokes and warm smiles. He really had taken a liking to Felix. That made me very happy.

I shifted in my seat. The fire heat had started to spread to my left arm and now my sleeve was hot on my skin. I moved to rest my head on the back of the chair and I folded my hands on my lap. Now my feet stretched out before me toward the fire. The yellow pattern on my socks changed color depending on how I positioned my foot in the light of the fire. I closed my eyes again.

I never thought that I would need someone in my life. The way Felix fit so perfectly. I’d assumed that my world would be filled with only familial and platonic loves. In many ways, I was glad I was wrong. Felix was surprising in the most comforting way. I loved how his words were kind and soft. He could make me laugh. And Felix always let me breathe. This space allowed me to process my emotions and become a more stable version of myself. I remembered that time Felix and I were caught in a rainstorm. He held his hoodie over our heads. I kept bumping into him since we had to stand so close. We ran under a building overhang. Felix let his hoodie drop from around us and he started to move a bit further away. Giving me space. Suddenly, I put my arms around his waist and drew him close. My face snuggling against his damp shirt. I had never done anything like this before. My cheeks were hot; I tightened my arms. I felt a low laugh in Felix’s chest as he hugged me back. It was so warm. Like a fire. Slowly spreading to every part of my heart.
