Promptober Day 7: Slam

James always wanted to be a basketball star. Fans cheering, racing down the court. This is where he felt alive. He loved the game, the chase. The squeak of his sneaks as his feet twisted. There he was, dribbling down the court. First he dodges a defender with a quick maneuver to the left. Then a pass to his friend Matias. Matias knew what to do. A fast pass back to James so he could set up for a shot. The basketball hit his hands. He lifted his arms, arching them ever so slightly to aim for the basket. Push and fwoosh. The ball left his hands as he jumped high in the sky. Sailing, he watched the ball arch toward the basket. All net, baby. The basketball swooshed through the basket without even touching the rim. Slam dunk!! James yelled out a loud “Woohoo!”

“James?”

He regained his senses remembering that he was in algebra class. James blinked. He was standing up next behind his desk, arms raised high. He had been day dreaming.

“Ummm yes Mr. Davies?” He muttered.

“Did you have something you wanted to share with the class.” Mr. Davies asked.

James glanced around. Matias met us eyes and smirked. Color started to rise in his cheeks.

“Uhh”, his voice wavered. “I just wanted to say, I think math is amazing…” James sat down.

“Well, thank you for that insight James. I appreciate your enthusiasm toward your studies. Now let us turn to page 105 in the workbook.” Mr. Davies continued.

James didn’t hesitate to open his book to the assigned page and start on the lesson. After a bit, he glanced over to Matias. His friend was smiling and mouthed the words “Woo hoo” as he mimed making a shot at the hoop. James smiled and started to laugh.

He really did love basketball.
