Shadow: EIF Poetry Challenge

The clock chimes three times

in the hallway

down the stairs.

I stand on the balistraide

Gripping the railing tight.

Sweat. Grime. Blood

Pumping in my veins.

A shadow passes over the window.

Blotting out the moonlight

A brief moment of darkness.

A silence that freezes my heart.

I smell sulfur.

Pungent, sickly air.

A prickly pinstripe freeze

Crawling over my skin.

I start.

Veined eyes, gray hands

And shadow.

I scream.
