For Red!

Hushed tones

And filtered thoughts

Rang throughout

The night

.

The name of the

Prisoner

Next to me

Leaves my memory

As the

Storm starts

.

Freedom!

Children!

For Red!

We cry

And chant

Together

.

Until all our hopes

Are taken

Stripped

From our

Mouths and

Hearts

.

Quiet whispers

And lost notes

Ring throughout

The cell

.

Only the sound

Of the man

Crying

Stings my ears

This poem is written in response to Sadje’s What Do You See? prompt. The picture is of a prison cell and this sparked a image of prisoners together. Why are they there? What lead them to this place? My writing depicts revolutionaries that have been captured after a rebellion. I don’t know exactly why, but I went a bit darker on this piece than I normally do. I’ve been itching to write more fiction, so I think this comes out in my poems. What do you see? How would you respond? Image credit: Tim Hüfner @ Unsplash

Thank you for reading Ivor. I agree that incareration (especially in the US) is a prolonged form of torture. After re-reading my poem, I definitely could have taken it farther…
